Willie Mae (Smith) Head was born on July 28, 1935 to Peter Marshall and Littie Mae Godfrey, in Log Town, Louisiana. At a young age her family relocated to Manhattan, New York, where she graduated from high school.
Throughout her life, Willie worked several jobs. While in Des Moines she worked as a Bus Aide for the Des Moines Public School District until she retired in 2007. In her free time Willie Mae enjoyed knitting, crocheting and quilting. She was also an exceptional cook who made a mean Sock-it-to-me cake. Her stuffing and broccoli cheese casserole were also welcome sights at the dinner table. From time to time she would also keep her mind sharp by doing word searches, crossword puzzles and playing solitaire. Willie was very much family oriented and welcomed "short" visits from family unless you were one of her grandchildren.
Willie passed away on December 13, 2020. She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis G. Head; her parents Peter and Littie Mae, two grandchildren and siblings, Arthur Marshall, Samuel Smith, Edward Smith, Marion Smith, Mary Louise Gladney, Emma Holmes, Lillie Mae Daniels and Lula Mae Buchanan.
Left to cherish Willie Mae memory are her children Cloteal Carr, Linda (Robin) Duncan, Carolyn King, James (Patricia) Head Sr., Bruce (Michelle) Head Sr. and Sharon (Kevin) Bell, 18 grand children, 46 great-grandchildren and 7 great-great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
