Mrs. Vera (Underwood) Spencer was born on June 28, 1928 to Joseph and Mary (Morrow) Underwood, in Birmingham, AL. She was educated in the Birmingham School District and graduated from Westfield High School.
Shortly after graduating, Vera planted her roots in Des Moines, IA. She would continue her education at Drake University and join Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. She also joined Burns United Methodist Church where she served on the usher board.
Vera would also meet the love of her life, Thomas Spencer, shortly after moving to Des Moines. Thomas dated and courted Vera until she accepted his had in marriage. In 1951, the two were married at Vera's sisters house. Two children was born from this union, Brenda and Thomas Jr.
In her personal time, Vera would work in her garden, cook those famous cabbage and greens, sew and work at the voting sites during elections. She was a kind spirit and was always on time.
On July 16, 2015 Vera answered the Master's call and stepped from time into eternity. She was greeted on the other side by her daughter, Brenda Joyce Spencer; her parents, Joseph and Mary; siblings, Clemmie King, Oscar Underwood and Mariola Hunter.
Vera leaves to cherish her memory, her loving husband, Thomas Sr.; son, Thomas Jr.; brother, James Curtis Underwood and a host of other relatives and friends.
