Velma Lee (Johnson) Marshall was born September 7, 1939 in Omaha, NE to Albert Lee Johnson and Mercedes (McKee) Price. She received her primary education at St. Marys Academy in New Orleans and also attended St Benedict Catholic High School in the city.
After graduation, Velma joined the world of work. She had a caring, nurturing manner and she found employment at San Francisco Hospital in San Francisco, CA. She found love there also and married John Marshall, with whom she had two children. She moved from Omaha to Des Moines in 1969 and found work for many years at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. She also worked for Bishop Drumm Home, Ramsey Nursing Home and the Des Moines Public Schools (as a teachers assistant). It was the troubled young people that Velma really loved. She would take them in if they had no where to stay and she would mother them back to the right way. She was a boy Scout leader and Troup #247 loved her cookies.
Velma played semi-pro basketball for the Callum Totters. She loved to sing and sang with the "Fascinators". She was always available to sing for friend and family functions. She was a long time member of Burns United Methodist Church where she sang with the choir, the "Messengers " and she participated in the "Trinity Supper Club" Ministry. She was a huge fan of the Los Angeles Lakers, Green Bay Packers and Nebraska Cornhuskers. Velma loved Harry Potter movies, card games like Old Maid, Gin Rummy and Bid Whist, and sharing her wisdom and love with her family and friends.
