Troy Donahue Currie

August 16, 1961– April 12, 2025

Troy Donahue Currie, 63, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, April 12, 2025, after a courageous and hard-fought battle with cancer.

Born in Brownsville, Tennessee, on August 16, 1961. Troy was the son of Jessie Lee and Lou Henri (Maclin) Currie. He graduated from Haywood High School in 1980, where his natural athleticism and love for sports began to shine. Troy could play just about any sport and loved competing—whether it was on the basketball court, the softball field, or eventually, on the golf course.

After high school, Troy moved to Des Moines to be closer to family and begin his career. He worked as a welder at Delavan, then at Miller the Driller, before joining the Laborers’ Local #177 Union where he spent the bulk of his career. As a proud union laborer, Troy had a hand in shaping the city of Des Moines. His work lives on in major development projects all across the city—work he took great pride in.

On October 13, 2001, Troy married the love of his life, Tracie Harding, in Des Moines. Together they built a life grounded in love, faith, and partnership. He was an active member of Jesus Christ Restoration Ministries, serving faithfully as a Deacon and Treasurer. Troy was always ready to lend a hand, wherever he was needed.

After retiring in 2020, he combined his love for golf and the outdoors by becoming a groundskeeper at Waveland Golf Course. It was a role he took seriously and thoroughly enjoyed—especially because it gave him the chance to golf for free.

Troy will be remembered for his magnetic presence, big smile, quick wit, unwavering loyalty, and deep love for his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He cherished time with his loved ones and filled his days with golf, laughter, dancing, fishing, tinkering with cars, and rooting for his beloved (and often frustrating) Chicago Bears.

Troy is survived by his loving wife, Tracie Currie; children, Tania (Chris) Goode, Ashley Smith, and Kendall Harding; and his cherished grandchildren, Heart, Levin, Alijah, Karter, Kiren, Kali, Detray, and Xion; siblings, Robert E. Maclin, Jesse L. Currie, Jeffery (Katherine) Currie, Anita (Eddie) Rice, and Diane Currie; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who loved him like family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Altha R. Greer, Wayne E. Maclin, and Carl A. Currie; his grandparents; and many beloved aunts and uncles.

Troy’s life was a beautiful mix of hard work, and playful joy. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

A celebration of life will be planned at a later date.
