Thomas Nichols Hawkins, Sr.

Thomas Nichols Hawkins, Sr. was born April 22, 1945 in Des Moines, Iowa to Robert and Marcell (Nichols) Hawkins. He was educated in the Des Moines Public School System where he graduated from East High School. He later furthered his education by attending Grandview College in Des Moines. After college he became a Master Plumber. He was the 1st African American member of the Steam Fitters Union, Local #33.

Thomas was married to Teresa L (Williams) Hawkins in 1992. A family oriented man, Thomas spent a lot of time with his children and family, teaching them to work hard for what they wanted. If you would do good and work hard he was always available to help you over the rough spots. He taught them to love God and follow your commitment to him with service. He loved his True Bible Baptist church and served by playing the drums for service. In his spare time he loved traveling, even overseas. Thomas loved playing golf with his friends and family, as well as attending and watching tournaments. Spending time in nature, riding his bike was another favorite pastime. He had attained the level of black belt in Tae Kwon Do. Thomas was not a singer, but he was the best whistler on the planet.

August 16th, 2021, Thomas went home to be with the Lord. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Marcell and his brothers, Larry and Gary Hawkins.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Teresa Hawkins; his children, Feleecia (David) Brown, Toyia (John III) Jewett, Thomas Hawkins, Jr., Ron Welch, Jr. and Angella Welch; his siblings, Stanley (Barbara) Hawkins, Anita Boston, Paulette (Bill) Fowler and Patrice Frazier and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family and friends.
