Theresa Simmons was the seventh child in a family of twelve children born to the proud parents of Archie and Erma Cooper Lucas on June 15, 1924, and ascended home at the age of 99 years old on December 30, 2023.
Mother Simmons was a lifelong resident of Des Moines, Iowa where she was educated in the Des Moines Public School System. In 1942 she was employed by the Des Moines Ordinance Plant and later employed by Mercy Hospital as a Nurses Aide.
Theresa was married to Henry L. Simmons, Jr. on December 13, 1943. They were married by the Rev. Henry Alexander Simmons, Sr. (Henry’s father), at his parents’ home in Des Moines, Iowa. This marriage continued for 68 years and from this union they were blessed with 13 children; Terry Lewis, Steven Hal, Theresa Joyrene, Archie Alexander, Ronald Eugene, Paul Phillip, Henry Charles, Rebecca Louise, Shirley Joanna, James Vincent, Sarah Lynn and twin girls, Ruth Ann and Roberta Ann.
Theresa was reborn into the Family of the Almighty God our Heavenly Father through the precious blood of Jesus Christ our Lord in the fall of 1955 and at that time was united by membership to the Maple Street Baptist Church, under the pastorage of the late Rev. George H. Parrish. In 1957, she became an active member of the Maple Street Deaconess Board. Mother Simmons was tireless in her praise to God. During her journey, she visited those in jail, prisons, nursing homes and hospitals, until her health dictated otherwise, and even then on her “good days,” she would still visit the sick in various nursing homes and hospitals as well as individual homes.
Mother Simmons touched many lives and was a constant inspiration to others just by the way she conducted herself daily. She loved to testify of God’s goodness to her and her family, her conversation, her sickness and heartbreaks in life and how God always brought her through each situation with renewed strength and faith in the Lord. She would always say, “God is Good, all the Time,” and He is.
Preceding her in death are husband, Pastor Henry Simmons; 5 precious sons, Archie Alexander, James Vincent, Steven Hal, Paul Phillip, and Henry Charles; her loving parents, four sisters and four brothers.
Those survived by Theresa Simmons are, Terry Lewis, Theresa Joyrene Simmons, Ronald Eugene, Rebecca Louise Singleton, Shirley Joannana, Sarah Lynn, Ruth Kunkle and Roberta A. Wahl, brother; Wilber Lucas, sister; Kathaleen Lucas- Baker, numerous grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and many great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and loved ones.
The family of Theresa wanted everyone to know how much your condolences, letters, cards and flowers mean to them. God bless you all for assisting them in their time of need.
