Pastor, former Missions President, former Expeditor, Superintendent, former President of Black Ministerial Alliance, Vice President of African American Leadership Coalition, father, husband, and friend Richard L. Daye was born in Durham, North Carolina on October 1, 1929 and raised in the small town of Hillsborough. A longstanding member of Dixon Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church For 21 years. Pastor Daye graduated from Hillsborough Negro High School and went on to Elizabeth City State College. He studied at Moody Bible Institute and went on to attend Allied Mechanical School of Tool and Dye. He also studied at the William Roberts School of the Bible for 2 years. In 1952, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served 3 years as a 3 rd Class Petty Officer. Superintendent R.L. Daye was saved and filled with the Holy Ghost in San Diego, California on February 24th, 1952. He will never forget his "spiritual mother", Mother Ardella Portis who led him to Christ. While in Des Moines, Supt. R.L. Daye became the first African-American to host a six day Gospel Train Show on cable television and the first African-American to become the head of the Parks and Recreation Paint Department for the City of Des Moines, Iowa. He was also a disc jockey on KUCB 89.3 for many years. He was married to his late wife Mother Carol A. Daye for 45 years and fathered four children. He married First Lady District Missionary Deborah K. Terry-Daye of Dallas, Texas in 2003. Pastor and Mother Daye recently celebrated their 13th wedding anniversary. Previous to marrying his late wife Mother Carol, he was engaged to marry "Sweet Juanita"... If you have never heard the story ask a family or church member and you are sure to get a chuckle. Superintendent Daye will never forget the teachings and leadership of his former jurisdictional prelates: Bishop Samuel Crouch, Bishop Van Goodlow, Bishop Wyoming Wells, Bishop Louis Henry Ford, and Bishop Hurley Bassett Sr. He is also thankful to God for Pastor Willy B. Matthews Sr., Mother Curtsina Matthews, and Mother Patricia Hayes for their mentorship. He owes a debt of gratitude to Pastor A. Brown and Bishop James Markam for laying the foundation and allowing him to preach at a young age and serve as the Vice President of the Central Illinois Evangelism Department at St. James COGIC. Superintendent R.L. Daye relocated to Des Moines, IA from Illinois in 1972 after being appointed by Presiding Bishop L.H. Ford. He was the pastor of East 17th Street COGIC for 3 years before establishing New Friendship Church of God in Christ, where he pastored for 43 years. Under his leadership, many men and women of God went on to serve in various capacities within the Church of God in Christ. Superintendent Daye loved doing mission work, evangelizing, and sharing jokes to make others smile. His mission work included the community food pantry at New Friendship, remodeling homes for single young mothers, and ministering to prisoners at the Newton Correctional Facility. He also served as an ambassador to the Des Moines Police Department, hosted Toys4Tots for over 10 years, and shared Bar-B-que with neighbors as an opportunity to witness. His combined passion for Bar-B-Que and evangelism opened the doors for many to hear the word of God. Former Member Tammy Brown was saved though his anointed Bar-B-Que ministry. He participated in the Drake Neighborhood farmers market for 16 years and was the owner and operator of Grandpa Dayes Open Bar-B-Que Pit, which reached many hungry local and out of town guests during the week of Drake Relays. He had a passion for reading, cooking, and spending time in his library studying the word of God. He loved to watch sports with family, friends, and especially his wife Deborah. His favorite football team was the Baltimore Ravens. His favorite television stations were The Word Channel, ESPN, and Food Network. Loved ones who proceeded him in death are Father, John Wesley Daye; Mother, Annie Daye (Liscomb); Sister, Arlene Daye; Brothers, John Willis Daye, Harold Daye; Late Wife, Carol Daye, and Brother-in-Law Clarence Mayo. He leaves to cherish his wife, Deborah K. Terry-Daye, DaughterBrenda "Googie" Daye-Wilson (Louisiana), SonsBrian "Bubba" Daye, Broderick "Boo" Daye, and Breon "Dawg" Daye. He also leaves to cherish his SisterCorine Mayo (North Carolina), sister-in-lawIsabell Bumpus Daye (North Carolina), Daughter-in-LawLaurie Daye, GrandkidsSheena Williams, Dominic Wilson, Darrius Wilson, Sharena (James) Ford, Bryce Wilson, Tiffany Hunter, Leslie Woodard, Kalyssa Russell, Amari Daye, Braxton Hunter; Nieces - Deborah (Jeff) Jeffrey, Phyllis Daye-Drew, Wanda (Samuel) Adams; nephewsBarron Mayo, Harold (Lee) Daye Jr, and a host of Great-Grandchildren.
