Sherman Russell Burrell, Jr. passed away June 12, 2022 in Mesa, Arizona.

Sherman, a former Des Moines resident will be funeralized on Saturday, July 2, 2022 at 1 pm from Bread of Life Church. Interment will be held at Oralabor Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday from 5-7 pm at the funeral home.

Sherman Russell Burrell was born in Des Moines, Iowa on October 2, 1947 to Sherman R. Burrell, Sr and Madeline (Scott) Burrell. He was raised by his father, mother and stepmother, Cecil Burrell.

Sherman was educated in the Des Moines Public School system where he graduated from East High School. He was actually drafted while still in high school and reported for duty right after graduation. Sherman was sent to Viet Nam in 1968, right at the height of the war. He was severely injured and sent home to recuperate. He earned a Bronze Star medal, Army Commendation Medal, Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and others.

Life for Sherman took a drastic turn, but he fought hard and with help, was able to make a life for himself.

Sherman was normally an optimistic person. That didnt change after he got hurt; you could tell that by his ever present smile. Sherman was still a very dignified person. He was a huge Denver Broncos fan! He loved watching the games on TV. Sherman couldnt cook, but loved going to McDonalds for his favorite chicken nugget and fries meal. He would wash it down with his favorite Dr. Pepper. He was a model car enthusiast and had shelves of the ones he put together. As a youngster he was also into model trains. He appreciated good soul music and the Temptations were his favorite. He enjoyed taking walks in the neighborhood. Sherman loved every body, especially his family.

Sherman moved to Mesa, AZ. In 1968 and it was there he passed away. He was 76 years old. Preceding him in death were his parents, Sherman Sr and Madeline Burrell; his step parents, Cecil Lavern Burrell and Wallace Kipper, Sr.

Sherman is survived by his siblings, Joey (Shawn) Burrell, Cheryl A. Burrell, Dennis Burrell and Rickie Western along with a host of cousins, extended family and friends. Visitation
