Sebelia Ann Black was the first hospital baby born to Daniel and Viola Perry on June 26, 1945 in Boonville, Missouri. She was born on her pastors wifes birthday; that's where she got her name from. Sebelia had eight brothers: William, Charles, Earl, Jewell, Clarence (Homer), Harold, John Francis and George. She also had six sisters: Josephine, Virginia, Lucille, Edna, Martha and Mary.
Sebelia, also known as Sam, attended a one-room school in Blackwater, Missouri. She rode the school bus from Blackwater to Boonville to attend high school. After high school, she moved to Des Moines, Iowa.
Sebelias first job in Des Moines was a Nurses Aide at Mercy Hospital. She also worked at Northwestern Bell Telephone Company as a long distance operator, service assistant and computer system administrator. In 1994 Sebelia received the Presidents Award for her work during the floods of 93. She received a special trip to Arizona for her hard work. Sebelia retired after 25 years of service. Shortly after her retirement, Sebelia worked for an internet company. Then, in 2001 she began to work for the Des Moines Public Schools as a Librarian. After 15 years, Sebelia retired for the second time.
In 2004 Sebelia joined New Birth Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorage of Rev. Clifford C. Wright. She was the churchs clerk/ secretary, trustee, assistant financial secretary and computer specialist, making the church bulletins, flyers, DVDs and anything the church needed done on a computer.
Sebelias relationship with her he husband, Cornelius Black began in 1984. They made it official 11 years later at the Botanical Gardens on May 20, 1995. They spent 36 inseparable years loving and caring for each other. What a blessing!
Sebelia loved the Kansas City Chiefs, Johnny Mathis, family reunions/get togethers, working on and ordering items on the computer.
She could present a tough exterior with her straight forward talk and facial expressions, but once people got to know her they knew she was a very nice person.
Sebelia departed this life on December 18, 2020. She is preceded in death by her parents, seven brothers and five sisters.
Left to cherish Sebelias memory are her husband, Cornelius Black; God-given daughter, Stephenie Black-Grant (Ruben); sister, Martha Vincent (Bill); brother, George Perry; aunts, Sallie Lewis and Lillie Pierce; brother-in-law, Ben Black (Ora); sisters-in-law, Esther Perry, Maxine Perry, Veola Perry, Verna Scott, Nola Ford, Joyce Madlock, Thea Black and Lavinia Black, along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.Visitation
