Sarah Serena Metcalf was born on August 15, 1920 to Celie Ofield, in Tulsa, OK.
Along life's path Sarah met Mr. Louis Metcalf. Louis courted Sarah until she accepted his hand in marriage. The two became on one May 29, 1939 in Ft. Smith, AR. The couple was blessed with three children: Billie, Louis and Sarah. A no nonsense mom, Sarah was a strict disciplinarian.
Sarah accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at a young age. When she moved to Des Moines she joined Maple Street Baptist Church. Sarah had been a member of Maple Street for over 60 years. She served in many capacities and eventually accepted an appointment to the Mother's Board.
Mother Metcalf's chosen profession was that of a homemaker and housekeeper. She took pride in caring for her children and tending to the needs of the home. Meals were always warm and wholesome and the house was always in order. Mother Metcalf was also a great cook. Her cornbread, pineapple coconut cake, fried chicken and homemade biscuits were always a favorite. She was also a skilled seamstress sewing her own custom drapes and mending anything that needed to be repaired. When her children got older, Mother Metcalf worked as a dietary aide at Calvin Manor and a cook at Drake University.
On May 15, 2016 Mother Metcalf was called to be with her Lord. She was reunited on the other side with her mother, Celie and a daughter, Sarah Curl-Trost.
Left to cherish Mother Metcalf's memories are two of her children, Billie and Louis; grandchildren, Monica Klampe, Louis Metcalf Jr. and Louis Wade Jr., 11 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.
