Sarah Agnes Coats

Sarah Agnes (Griffin) Coats was born December 8, 1936 in Bevier, Missouri. She was one of eight children born to Everett and Annie Wells Griffin.



Sarah graduated from Lincoln High School in Moberly, Missouri. After a brief time in Fort Wayne, Indiana she moved to Des Moines and began building a life for herself. She found employment with the Des Moines Public Schools. She worked at East High School for many years before her retirement in 1998.



Sarah attended True Bible Baptist Church and loved to hear the choir sing. Sarah also found love in Des Moines. She and Willie Coats were married in 1964. Together they raised Janet and Joseph. In her spare time Sarah loved fishing and cooking. She made the best macaroni and cheese and fried chicken! She also liked to travel. Sarah traveled to Canada, Florida and California. She would get on the bus or on a plane and go anywhere she wanted, by herself. She was very independent and a no nonsense kind of woman; but she was also compassionate and wise. She enjoyed socializing with the Friends of the Library and the Prime Timers; and of course spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.



Shortly after midnight on May 12, 2014, an angel came and whispered Sarah's name. She was needed in Heaven. What a reunion that was. Sarah's parents, Everett and Annie Wells were there to meet her. So were her siblings, Betty Dudley, Sofia Smith, Homer Griffin, Helen Hester, Rozetta Griffin, Joann Griffin and Leona Griffin.



Left to cherish Sarah's memory are her children, Janet Blair and Joseph Brown; her grandchildren, Nichole Redd, Jennie Rochon and Paige Rochon; her five great grandchildren and many friends.
