Robert Wardell Hobbs Sr. was born on January 2, 1944 to George and Bertha (Willis) Hobbs, in Bowling Green, MO. He was educated in the local school district and graduated from Bowling Green High School.
Shortly after graduating from high school, Robert enlisted into the United States Army. He served in the 101st Airborne Division and received a Honorable Discharge in 1971, after 6 years of service. His courageous service to his country also earned him a Purple Heart.
Once discharged from the U. S. Army, Robert, simply known as "Hobbs", enlisted in the Army of the Lord. Hobbs served tirelessly on the Pastor's Aide Committee and the Kitchen committee at East 17th Street Church of God in Christ. We all have sat in front of a plate of his tasty BBQ. Robert took pride in the care and detail he put into feeding the saints. The city of Des Moines will miss driving to the East 17th Church parking lot to grab a good ol' rib dinner. He loved his church, church family, and especially his Pastor. One could always count on Robert to be in the back of the church singing his favorite song, "Jesus, Jesus, Jesus". Not only did he take pride in his culinary efforts, Hobbs loved to dress! When Hobbs was home, he was an avid handyman. He loved yard work and making his grass the envy of the neighborhood... .until he saw a snake. He HATED snakes! All in all, Hobbs was generous, opinionated and full of fun.
Robert met Violet Austin whom he wed in 1989. Between the two of them they had six children. He loved them all and would do anything for them but he really loved the grandkids!
March 7, 2016, Hobbs left the cares of this world behind when he was called home. He was 72 years old. Waiting to welcome him to the other side were his parents, George and Bertha Hobbs and his three sisters, Ruby Bell, Arlene Kelley and Rose Mayfield
Left to cherish Roberts memory are his wife, Violet Hobbs; his children, Rochelle Hobbs, Bobbette Hobbs, JoAnna (Shawn) Davis, Dena (Jeff) Madsen, Robert Hobbs, Jr (DeAnna), Andrew (Carla) Jackman, his adopted children, Tina, Terry and Timmy Thomas; siblings, Rebeca Gilkey Marylou McPike, Alice Talton, Darlene Mayfield, Carl Hobbs; sisters in law, Lori Woolery and Viola (Earl) Harrison and brother in law, Ronald Austin; 16 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren along with a host of extended family and many, many friends.
