Robert Edmonds, affectionately known as "Chinn" was born February 4th, 1935 to Asalee (Durham) and Alex Edmonds in Brinkley, Arkansas. He was the second son of seven siblings. He departed this life on Tuesday, January 7th, 2025 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa at the age of 89. He was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife, Rose Ann, his parents Alex (Buddy) and Asalee, sister Alice Estes, daughters Shakarra Edmonds and Carolyn Armstrong and granddaughter, Alexis Jordan. Robert graduated from Marian Anderson High School in Brinkley, AR in 1953 before taking to the skies, serving in the United States Air Force during the Korean and Vietnam wars. His time in the military shaped and instilled in him a sense of discipline and adventure that would further guide him throughout his life. After his honorable discharge in 1957, he settled in Des Moines, IA where he met his wife of 35 years, Rose Ann Clay, who was his rock.
Roberts’ formative years spent working the families cotton fields cultivated in him a strong work ethic and desire to be self-sufficient. Therefore, it was no surprise he was a celebrated business owner and member of local social organizations, who left an unforgettable mark on his community. In 1958, he owned with Melvin Harper the 790 Vets Club, just off the infamous “Center Street” a once thriving successful hub for African American businesses until 1969 when it was torn down to make way for urban renewal. During this same period, he also owned and operated Ebony Lounge on West University Avenue. In 1970 he built Robert’s Lounge, which opened November 13th, and became an establishment that quickly gained notoriety as a gathering place for friends and families to enjoy local and national R&B, Jazz and Blues entertainers alike. His entrepreneurial spirit didn't stop there; he secured several other nightclubs throughout the 80's, a handyman shop, and other properties, which were all a testament to his vision, ambition and drive. His kind spirit and selfless acts made him well-known in the community, and his ability to connect with others through laughter and camaraderie left lasting memories in the hearts of many.
Robert also appreciated the simple joys of life. His love of games such as dominos and cards brought him closer to family and friends, with plenty of moments filled with smack talk, and a lot of laughter. Every Memorial Day weekend from 1981 to 2019, he traveled to or was the host of the Durham- Edmonds family reunion; an annual tradition where all generations gathered together and showcased the family history and talent through endless stories, dance, song and good food the entire weekend. In addition, each Labor Day weekend he traveled to Arkansas to attend “Cotton Plant Days” where he would give a generous contribution, during these visits to his hometown church, Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church, in Cotton Plant, Arkansas.
Robert leaves to cherish his life and legacy his oldest daughter, Barbara Whaley, Arlington, TX; Grace (Milton) Edmonds Keyes, Kent, WA; Margenele Carroll, Des Moines, IA; Nicole Edmonds, Des Moines, IA; sons, Alex (Toyoa) Ritchie, Des Moines, IA; Olajuwon Edmonds, Des Moines, IA; and Clifford Meriwether, Denver, CO. He is also survived by his loving siblings Clemell (Ruth) Edmonds, Cotton Plant, AR; Dannese Flennoy, Aurora, IL; Alex (Mary) Neal, Detroit, MI; Larry Purdiman, Little Rock, AR; Elaine (Joe) Jackson,
Little Rock, AK; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members; Joann Rose, Nate Hart, George Porter, Robert Hawthorne, Albert Hall and many other good friends who will forever hold him dear in their hearts. May their memories remain intertwined with his, as Robert’s legacy of love, joy and goodwill continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In mourning Roberts’ passing, we remember not only his accomplishments and his passions but also the man himself—a special soul whose laughter, kindness, and wisdom touched so many. May Robert "Chinn" Edmonds rest in peace, surrounded by the love he shared and the memories he created—always remembered, always loved, and always cherished.
