Myrtle M. Galbreath

Susie Myrtle Maggie Mae Galbreath was born February 28, 1927 to George and Hattie Mae (Buckner) Bruner in Auxvasse, Missouri. She was named after several family members but decided that Myrtle was the name that suited her best.



Myrtle was educated in the Jacksonville, Illinois school system where she graduated from Jacksonville High School. Her neighbor had a friend helping to plow a garden. He introduced her to his friend, Richard and it was a match. They were married in 1948 and soon after moved to Des Moines. Myrtle did day work for awhile, but then was employed by Younkers Department store as an elevator operator.



Myrtle loved the Lord and joined Bethel AME Church. She served as a missionary and sang in the choir until her declining health kept her from coming to church.



When not at church Myrtle loved to read. She read her Bible throughout the day. She also wrote poetry inspired by her religious training. Myrtle liked to go fishing, playing Bridge and attending family gatherings. She would make her famous greens and cabbage and sometimes a pie to go with them. Myrtle loved the children in the family and she loved any and all pets. Myrtle and Richard never had children, but all the nieces and nephews were so special to them.



Richard went home to be with the Lord in 2011. Myrtle went to join him on July 19, 2013. Also waiting to welcome her home were her parents, four sisters and five brothers.



Myrtle leaves to mourn her passing her sisters, Gertrude Lee and Laura Allen; her brothers Willie and Charles Bruner, numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of extended family and friends.

Myrtle will be available for viewing at the funeral home on Friday from 10 am to 5 pm. Family hour will be held from 12 noon to 1 pm the day of the service at Bethel
