November 26, 1962 — February 1, 2018

Mildred Coplen

Mildred Coplen was born November 26, 1962 in Chicago, IL to Ira and Mary Alice (Coplen) Johnson. She moved to Des Moines in 1990.

Mildred was a community activist, working through Urban Dreams and the Wilkie House to make the lives of those around her the best they could be. When she wasn't working, Mildred was the life of the party! She was funny, opinionated and brutally honest. She loved to dance and sing around the house. She was the 'Super Bowl Party Queen', even if her favorite Pittsburg Steelers didn't win. All the family gatherings demanded she make her famous spaghetti. Every one knew the 117 ingredients she put in it, but it wouldn't taste the same. The missing ingredient was her love. Her favorite place was her recliner. She slept there, gave orders to the grand children from there, and watched her favorite Jerry Springer shows from her recliner.

Mildred passed away February 1, 2018. She was gone too soon at the age of 55. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ira Johnson and Mary Coplen; her siblings, Glenda Johnson, Calvin Coplen, Brenda Coplen and Jimmie Johnson.

Left to cherish her memory are her childrens' father, Kelvin Briggs, Sr; her children, Peter Coleman, Phillip Coleman, Kelvin Briggs, Jr, Kelindre Briggs, DeAngelo Briggs, Kaishay Briggs, Kenesha Briggs, Deontezsha Gunn and Sherise Henning; her siblngs Janey 'Rusty' Coplen, Larry Copeland, luEthel 'Velvet' (Johnny) Williams, Jacqueline 'Hi' Johnson, Ira 'Big Man' Johnson, Ivan 'Lil Man' Johnson, Wanda Marshall and Kadia and Freddy Haynes, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins extended family and many friends.Visitation
