Michael Andrew Woods

Michael Andrew Woods was born March 6, 1949 in Shelbyville, Missouri to Delbert and Pearl Elizabeth (Howard) Woods. He was the 13th of 14 children born to this union.

Michael was educated in the Shelbyville Public School System. Shortly after graduation he enlisted in the United States Army where he was assigned to the infantry. Michael did an overseas tour in Viet Nam where he served as a marksman. This was the beginning of a life long interest in guns and marksmanship. Michael loved going to the range for target shooting; and he also owned several guns. He was a hunting enthusiast and fisherman. Michael was an avid reader and quiet intellectual. His favorite pastime was working the New York Times daily crossword puzzle. Michael also loved to play golf.

Michael returned from the service and moved to Des Moines where he was employed by AT&T and then the United States Postal Service. He had a love and understanding for the complexity of electricity and computers. He combined them in his employment of building and programming computers. A proud man with strong convictions, Michael was also very sensitive. He was a self sacrificing, loving and generous father.

Michael was a member of King of Kings Missionary Baptist Church. He taught the Adult Sunday School class for several years.

May 13, 2015 Michael answered the Masters call to rest. He was 66 years old. Preceding him in death were his parents, Delbert and Pearl Woods; his siblings, Robert, Hazel, Juanita, Bonnie, Patricia and John Woods.

Left to cherish Michael's memory are his children, Reverend Dr. Virgil (Teresa) Woods, Andrea (Tony) Muhammad and Sherry Tate; his grandchildren, Carissa and Virgil Woods II and Eric Tate; his siblings, Mildred, Betty, Ida, Sharon, Lois, Barbara and Linda Woods; his former wives, Twyla Woods-Buford and Shirley K. Woods along with his nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
