Mary Etta McQuerry was born on March 17, 1915 to Jesse and Mayme Goldie (Black) Bundy, in Hannibal MO. She was educated in the local school district and graduated from Douglas High School.
Mary briefly lived in Denver, CO but would eventually make Des Moines, IA her home. She worked in a variety of career fields throughout her life. She was the first black woman to be hired as manager and operator of the Reeds Ice Cream Bungalow; she was the first black person hired to work the counter at Katz Drug Store and worked as a substitute teacher for the Des Moines Public Schools. Mary also tutored Drake University students in Latin. Most recently, Mary was an in-home child care provider.
Mary loved to have fun. She enjoyed going to the casino, doing seek & search puzzles and taking care of her grandbabies.
On June 14, 2015, after one hundred years, Mary stepped from time into eternity. She was greeted on the other side by her loving husband, Milton; her daughter, Patricia Hill; her parents, Jesse and Mayme; her siblings, Margaret Butler, William Bundy, Lucille Bundy, , Jesse Bundy, Harry Bundy and Betty Bibbs.
Left to cherish her memory her daughters, Bonnie Anderson, Margaret McQuerry, Rose Ostrand and Carolyn Hill-Lomax, her brother, Herbert Bundy along with a host of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
