July 20, 1951 — April 22, 2017

Marvene Thor Ackiss

Marvene Thor Ackiss was born July 20, 1951 to the parentage of Walter Ackiss and Ethel Sellers in Des Moines, IA. Marvene was educated in the Des Moines Public School System. He completed his general studies at North High School, where he lettered in wrestling.

At the age of seven Marvene almost drowned as he fell from a raft, made by himself, his brother and another buddy. He was identified with one of his hands sticking out of the water, which saved his life. After a short recovery, he kept it moving with a kind spirit and much endurance.

On June 13, 2009 Marvene married the former Mary Johnson. To this union two children were inherited. Marvene had a great appreciation for his family, especially his children. It was during this time Marvene gave his life to the Lord. He was baptized by Reverend Alex Crawford at Church of the Nazarene.

As a lifelong resident of Des Moines Marvene lived every moment to the fullest, with a smile. He enjoyed fishing, listening to jazz, and playing chess. One of his favorite songs was "Brighter Day" by Kirk Franklin. Marvene could be caught dancing at any moment without notice - doing the James Brown splits. Boy could he dance! Having a good time at all times was what Marvene lived for.

At the drop of a hat Marvene, would offer help to anyone in need for a small service fee of $5.00. He was easy going with a dry sense of humor that would keep everyone laughing..

Marvene made his life transition on April 22, 2017. He was 65 years old. His parents; Walter Ackiss, Sr. and Ethel Sellers; his brother, Walter Ackiss, Jr., and his sister, Nancy Ackiss preceded him in death.

Left to cherish Marvenes funny and ongoing memories are his wife; Mary Ackiss; his children, Martina (Alonzo) Quinn, Marvene Ackiss, Jr, Lastasha and Eric; his siblings, Min. Toni Harris, Rosa Hutchinson, Marsha Slaughter, Michael (Sharon) Ackiss, Donita (Tom) Powell all of Des Moines, IA; seven grandchildren, along with a host of extended family members and many friends.
