Marlon Lashun Hughes was born September 6, 1975 to Katherine Hughes and Marvin Pentrandra in Beloit, Wisconsin. He was so cute and loving that his grandma called him "Sweet Thang" and it stuck. As he grew up, it was shortened to just plain "Sweets".
Sweets moved to Chicago as a youngster and graduated from Tilden High School. When he relocated to Iowa he attended Vatterott College and earned his HVAC-R certification. He was a machinist at Dillon Tires at the time of his death.
Sweets loved to talk!!! Oh my goodness, he didn't meet a stranger and he could talk to you about anything. He was the comedian of the family also, finding humor in any situation. Besides talking he loved listening to old school music. Sweets collected old cars and took pride in keeping them looking their best. His dream was to take some classes so he could work on the old school cars. His riding companions were his faithful Mastiffs. Sweets was a good cook because he loved to eat. He could really hook you up with some chicken fried rice. After eating he could sit back and watch his favorite football or basketball team.
When Sweets wasn't working or hanging around the house, he spent as much time as possible with his daughters. He was a great Dad! He even did the "dress up in makeup and tutu" thing as long as he could stay in the house. There was nothing he wouldn't do for his girls.
And suddenly, he was gone. Marlon passed away suddenly, August 17, 2015 at the age of 39. Preceding him in death were his grandparents, Vonzella Smith, Fannie Hughes and Buster and Hubert Hughes.
Left to cherish Marlon's memory are his parents, Katherine Hughes and Marvin P. Hughes; his step father, James Mills, the love of his life, Kayla Vankekerix; his daughters, Amirra Hughes, Mahrley Hughes and Jahlonni Smith; his granddaughter, Miyah; his siblings, Tywonyia Hughes, Markas Hughes and Danny (Alvania) Ferrell; and a host of extended family and many friends.
