Marie Ortiz

Marie Antoinette Ortiz, 46, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center surrounded by her loving family. A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, February 4, 2024, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Revival Center COGIC. Immediately following at 8:00 p.m. family and friends are invited to share loving memories and stories of Marie. A private family burial will be held at a later date.

She was born to John lee Sr. and Marie (Garcia) Miller in Des Moines on December 16, 1977. Marie grew up in Marshalltown where she attended school. Following school, Marie began working in customer service and later in management in customer service. She married Edmundo Ortiz Alvarado in Marshalltown in 2001. She later relocated to Des Moines.

Marie loved spending time with her family and being a Mimi to her grandchildren was the most important thing in her life. Marie was a great Tia Reeree and honorary mother to lots of “her babies”. Her relationships with people were very special. Everyone shared their own unique bond with her. She also enjoyed couponing, calling and texting everyone to make sure they were okay, crafting even making various stuff for anyone in need, donating to local charities to help. Her kind caring actions to help others will be missed by many.

Those left to cherish her loving memory are her husband Edmundo Ortiz Alvarado; daughters Ebony Ortiz and Preciosa Ortiz; grandchildren Penelope “Penny” Ortiz, Fernando “Juni” Ortiz, Preston “Guero” Ortiz-Fleming; father Johnlee Miller Sr.; siblings Jaenine “Twin”Segura, Omeka Elder, sister cousin Shontell (Derrick) Garth, Jasmine, Monique, John Jr., James Sr.; nieces and nephews Imani “Princess” (Devin Jones) Segura, JJ Segura, Cookie Segura, Jojo Segura, Sapo (Jasmine Shannon) Elder, Addy Elder, and Ziggy Elder; many other cousins; and close family friends.

She was preceded in death by her mom Tone Loc; Granny; children Oscar, Edmundo Jr., Esperanza.; and her niece Oddy K.
