Lucille D Herndon

Ms. Lucille Herndon passed away on April 23, 2020.

Funeral services will be held at 11 am Thursday April 30th at Henderson's Funeral Home (following CDC and state guidelines). Interment to follow at Glendale.

Lucille Dixon Herndon was born Dec. 10, 1928 in Des Moines, IA to William L. and Birdie (Ware) Dixon.

She was educated in Des Moines schools and graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1946.

In 1944 she married William McKinley Herndon. Together they raised a family of seven children: William McKinley Herndon Jr., Lucia Ellen Herndon, Lori Michele Herndon, Michael Kevin Herndon, David John Herndon, Eric Dixon Herndon and Leslie Louise Herndon.

Lucille was the heart of the house. Chief cook and bottle washer, Dr. Mom, wiper of tears and a fearless warrior for her children. She also was the accountant for her husbands business: Home Ash Service. In the little spare time she seemed to have she would spend time reading; magazines and books, chances are it would be one of her favorite mysteries.

Lucille was a mother extraordinare. The Herndon household was a magnet for neighborhood children. The yard was filled with children on swings, in the sandbox, on the tetherball court or riding one of the extra bicycles. At the end of every summer she hosted a neighborhood cookout for dozens of kids.

She was an excellent cook managing to serve tasty meals to a full table of hungry family members. Top of the list favorites included the Sunday breakfasts featuring flakey, home-made biscuits; Saturday fried chicken, light as a cloud mashed potatoes and M&M squares. Her grandsons still rave about her simple but scrumptious beefburgers.

Lucilles other love was for animals. She was never without cats and dogs, including taking two elderly cats when she moved to an elder care facility.

Above all, Lucille was kind to all who came her way. Those of us who knew her, knew what being truly loved felt like.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; sons, Michael and Eric; grandson, Chauncey James Teasley; and brothers, Thurman Dixon and Ernest Dixon

Lucille is survived by her children: William, Lucia, Lori, David and Leslie; grandchildren, William Quincey Herndon, Christopher Jeremy Herndon, Melissa Horning Dashields, Timothy Herndon Horning and Kristin Zoe Herndon and great-grandchildren Jordan Marie Dashields, Kobe Abdul Dashields and Christopher Jeremy Herndon Jr.
