Lowrine Walker

Lowrine passed away on March 14, 2023.

Lowrine (Carr) Walker was born January 15, 1935 in Batesville, MS to parents E.J. and Cora (Patton) Carr. She was educated and graduated from the Batesville Public school system .

Lowrine married Charles Lindberg Walker in Batesville and he went north in the early 60’s to scout out the land. He thought is was good so he sent for his wife. Lowrine was a good cook and quickly found a series of jobs, doing what she loved. She worked for the Des Moines Public School system for many years before her retirement.

When Lowrine wasn’t baking her famous 3 layer Coconut cakes or greens and hot water cornbread, a quiet day on the fish bank relaxing enough. Lowrine also loved to shop at vintage and consignment shops. Dressing up for Sunday service was a treat. Hats, shoes, dresses or suits were all in order, and it was even better if you got it “for the low”. Lowrine sang in the choir, handled the church kitchen, and was an usher for many years at Mt. Hebron Baptist Church. She attained the title of “Church Mother” in her later years. But nothing was better than spending time with her family. She mothered many foster children into adults.

On March 14, 2023, Lowrine answered the Master’s call to rest. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles L Walker; her foster sons, Michel and Marion; her siblings, Will Lee Carr, Emma Bolden and Ruthie Carr and a foster granddaughter, Monica Sandoval.

Left to cherish Lowrine’s memory are her son, Charles (Sandra) Walker; grandchildren, Arrius Scott Walker (Scottie), Charles Walker II, and Tiffany Walker; great grandchildren, De`Jah and Davion Houston, Charles Walker III, Sandrea Walker Ritchie and Jaylen Nicholas; foster children, Shaquae, A`Quanda, Tareka, William, and Cianta Carter; foster grandchild, James Harkert; foster great grandchildren, Cavan Harker, Valerie and Enrique Sandoval; foster daughter in law Terry Harkert; along with siblings, Melvin “MJ” (Ella) Carr, AB (Trina) Carr, James Carr, Calvin Carr, Mattie Tynes, Dorothy Taylor, Lucy Jefferson, Leslie Carr and Alsie Carr, Daughter Gloria Carr Harris and her extended family, church family and friends.
