Leonard Stovall was born In Rex 5, Iowa; (formerly the coal mining town of Buxton). He was the son of Andrew Stovall and Maude Edwards. He attended high school in Lovilla, Iowa where he graduated.
After graduation Leonard joined the United States Navy and served his country honorably during World War II. Upon his discharge from the Navy he came home, found a job at Iowa Packing Company and started making a life for himself. He was a hard worker and provider. Leonard worked for Iowa Pack over 25 years. After that retirement, he went back to work and worked for Armstrong Tire and Rubber for over 25 years. He was very frugal, keeping the first dollar he ever made. He said "Money needs to be protected; let me hold yours so it will be protected."
Leonard married the former Marcelline "Peachy" Doyle and raised a family. After her death, he married Carroll Clayborne and was a father figure for her children along with many others.
Leonard joined Bethel AME church in 1950. He was such a dedicated member, that many of the youngsters referred to him as "the man who lives at the church." Poppy, as he was affectionately called, was the Pastors Steward, Trustee, Choir and Men's Ministry member. He was "Mr. Bethel" always there with his great big friendly simile. He loved God, his family and people-in that order. He was a sharp dresser and his grandsons were taught to dress like a gentleman. Leonard like to watch Jeopardy, travel and of course, attend church even if he was on vacation.
December 1, 2016, Leonard slipped away to be with Jesus. He was 92 years old. Waiting to welcome him to the other side were his parents, Andrew and Maude; his wives, Marcelline and Carroll; his grandsons, Doyle Buckner and Keith Clayborne; step son, Dennis Clayborne; siblings, Warren Stovall, Robert Stovall, Elsie Gee, Lillian Moore and Andrew Stovall.
Leonard leaves to cherish his memory his children, David (Diane) Stovall, Rev. Monica Stovall, Bridget (Demery) Butts, and Tracey Stovall; Donetta Clayborne-Stafford and Keith (Bernadette) Clayborne; his grandsons DaRon, Kishon, Kendrick, Kendall and Kyle and his four great grandsons; a host of extended family and many friends.
