Larry Lamar was born January 6, 1946 in Chicago , Il to John Lamar an Thressa Cherry. Larry and his family moved to Des Moines when he was just a youngster. He attended primary school here and graduated from Valley High School in West Des Moines. Larry was a member of Mt. Hebron Baptist Church as a child. Later in life, Larry would be known as "Preacher" because he carried his bible everywhere. He loved to discuss the word and would remind you that tomorrow is not promised.
Soon after graduation, Larry enlisted in the United States Army. He served during the Viet Nam war and was discharged in 1970.
Upon his return to the States, Larry obtained employment at Wilson Packing House as a meat cutter. He later worked for Helena Chemical Company.
Larry loved to eat! Family gatherings with big community meals were his favorite. He would even bring his own Tupperware so he could take some home. He loved McDonald's hamburgers dipped in strawberry shakes. Larry also liked to sing. He and his brothers would get together in his bedroom and sing the "doo-wops" to all the hit music, back in the day. Larry loved James Brown and even mastered some of his dance moves. Boy those feet could move! He liked to talk and discuss world events. He loved to roller skate and shoot pool; and Larry was a sharp dresser, too. He thought it important that he looked good; (which is why he always carried his tooth brush with him) and was an avid body builder. He kept his cars looking good also. Family was very important to Larry and he loved being around his siblings, children and grandchildren.
On October 21, 2105, Larry peacefully stepped into glory at his home. He was 69 years old. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Thressa; his siblings, Michael and Diane; and his stepfather, Omar James.
Left to cherish Larry's memory are his children, Monique Lamar, Larrisha Peterson and Jashia Peterson; his siblings, Eugene Cherry, Dennis Lamar, Carl Lamar, Pam Lamar, Wayne Lamar, Omega James and Judy Lamar; 13 grandchildren and a host of extended family and friends.
