Brother Khalid Hakim Abdar-Rashid passed from this life on May 23, 2014 at his home.
Born Darryl Rogers on July 2, 1958 in Des Moines, Iowa to Mary Rogers, Khalid came into the Faith over 20 years ago. He accepted the teachings of Islam and changed his name.
Khalid initially had a hard knock life, but he straightened it out and became a community activist and a passionate advocate for 2nd chance services. He worked at Creative Visions for many years and was most recently employed by Spectrum, a resource center for ex offenders. He went by Port Of Entry every day to check on others and keep himself in check.
Khalid was an avid conversationalist; he could and would talk about everything. He loved to expound on politics. He listened to the talk shows and talked back to them. You were hard pressed to get a word, let alone your opinion, in. Khalid could not keep still. His mind was always going, even when his body wasn't. He loved gadgets and anything technical and he loved to travel.
Khalid will be sorely missed by his daughters, LaQuana Whatley and Breanna Hart; his siblings, Sherri, Charles and Raymel Rogers; his grand son, Zaeden Whatley and the many men and women he helped to reclaim their lives.
