Joe Whiteside

Joseph “Joe” Willie Whiteside, formerly of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, October 12, 2024, at Accura Healthcare in Pleasantville. A visitation will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at Corinthian Baptist Church in Des Moines from 10:00 A.M. – 11:00 A.M. Immediately following visitation his homegoing celebration will begin at 11:00 A.M. with Reverend Dr. Jonathan Whitfield officiating. A private family burial will take place at a later date.

Joe was born on April 6, 1936, in Gibson, Tennessee to Willie and Betty (Mayo) Whiteside. He grew up in Benton Harbor, Michigan where he attended school. Joe lived in Colorado, and Iowa City before moving to Cedar Rapids. He married Janice McBride and the couple resided in Cedar Rapids. Joe worked construction and at Quaker Oats. Joe enjoyed volunteering and helping people at Mission of Hope in Cedar Rapids.

Joe enjoyed spending time with his family. He also enjoyed body building and working out, riding his bike, country western music, and country western clothing.

Those left to cherish his loving memory are his wife Janice Whiteside of Cedar Rapids, IA; children JoAnn (Timothy) Whiteside Bentley of Des Moines, IA, Brenda (Dosie) Martin of Jackson, TN, Joe Westly (Teresa) Whiteside of Grand Blanc, MI, Brandon Whiteside of OK, and Winifred “Desiree” (Joseph James) Whiteside James of OK; a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; siblings Mildred Whiteside of Humbolt, TN, Mary Pledge of Cedar Rapids, IA, Benny Whiteside of Oakdale, IA, and Emanuel (Barbara) Whiteside of AZ; sister-in-law Mary Whiteside of Cedar Rapids, IA; host of nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents; son Joseph William Whiteside; siblings Earlene Brown, Florence Love, Gene Whiteside, Albert Whiteside, Eugene Whiteside, and David Whiteside.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.
