Jerry Fonzo Cooper, 77, passed away on July 14, 2024, in Des Moines, Iowa, the same city where he was born on January 30, 1947. A private family burial will be held at the Iowa Veteran's Cemetery in Adel, Iowa.
Jerry graduated from Des Moines Technical High School, which set the foundation for his lifelog dedication to practical skills and problem-solving. A proud veteran, Jerry served in the United States Army from 1967 to 1969, dedicating himself to his country during a pivotal time in history.
Following his military service, Jerry embarked on a significant career with the Des Moines Public School System as a Maintenance Engineer. His commitment to ensuring safe and functional learning environments has left a lasting impact on countless students and faculty members.
Jerry was the lead singer of a local band and he also enjoyed singing gospel with his siblings at churches around the Des Moines area. As an excellent cook, Jerry showed love to all through his cooking. His recipes are sure to live on through family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Harlene Cooper; his son, Jerry Cooper, Jr.; and his parents, Clyde and Dencie Drain. Jerry’s legacy continues through his children, Lynea Cooper-Pitts (Kenneth), Armirra Cooper, Cassius Cooper, Terence Stewart (Pat), and Tony Burrell (Amy). He was also a cherished grandfather to Larry Mason III (Ashlie), Heaven Booker, Cassius Cooper, Jr, Myla Cooper, LaTorshaTomlinson, Terence Stewart, Jr., Toren Stewart, Miles Burrell, Makena Burrell, and a great-grandfather to several great-grandchildren. His sister, Clydette Cox (Rudy), and a host of relatives also survive him.
Jerry’s time was marked by his service to both his country and his community, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
