Jerald 'Jay' Woods Jr

Jerald Jay Woods, Jr,, born December 31, 1970, was the first born son of Jerald and Phyllis (Robinson) Woods. Jay was a lifelong resident of Des Moines. He attended Valley High School in West Des Moines. He graduated in 1989 after earing letters in Football, Wrestling and Track. As a youngster, Jay also played baseball and excelled in Kung Foo Martial arts, like his idol, Bruce Lee.



Jay professed a hope in the risen Christ at a young age. He was baptized at Greater Love Church of God in Christ, where his father is the pastor. He served the church as Adjutant Security for the Church of God in Christ, Iowa Jurisdiction. He would often work security or drive as an escort for funeral services.



When Jay wasn't working you could find him on his beloved motorcycle or washing his car. He was also a devoted family man. He spent time with his children teaching them the importance of family, church and serving God. Jay didn't think he could sing, but he had a great voice that he used singing along to his collection of "Fred Hammond" songs. He also played the drums and was the expert BBQ cook. Jay loved Thai food and drank chocolate milk with everything. And did we mention that Jay loved to shop?!!! Suits and shirts and shoes and jewelry and ... it didn't matter. His closet was full- but VERY organized.



And suddenly he was gone. On October 7, 2016 after a brief illness, Jay went home to be with the Lord, surrounded by his family. He was 45 years old. Waiting to welcome him to the other side were his grandparents, George and Vivian Woods, Fannie Mable Allison and Andrew Robinson.



Left behind to cherish Jay's memory are his wife, Kimberly Witherspoon Woods; his children, Dominique Woods, Jada Woods, JaNai Woods, DeVante Witherspoon and Taylor Witherspoon; his parents, Supt. Jerold Woods, Sr. and Mother Phyllis Woods; his sister Shondale (Lonnie) Ingram and brother, Melvin Woods, his father and mother in law, Clarence and Shirley Witherspoon and his brother in law, Clarence Witherspoon, Jr. along with extended family and many friends and colleagues.
