James Edward "Babe" King Sr. was born on January 17, 1952 to John King Sr. and Geraldine (Coats) King-Gordon, in Columbia, MO.
Early in life, Babe served in the US. Navy where he was a Golden Glove Champion. After his service in the military, he would plant his roots in Des Moines, IA. Babe attended Des Moines Area Community College where he earned a printing certification and started his bricklayers apprenticeship.
While attending DMACC he met the love of his life, Carolyn Ann Head. On January 17, 1975 they were joined in holy matrimony. Between the two of them they would have five children: Katherine, Eric, Michael, James Jr. and Bruce. James was a genuine, real husband, father and grandfather; who always taught his family to put God FIRST!
Shortly after starting his family he became a deacon under Pastor Fred Green at Macedonia Baptist Church. He was later called to the ministry.
During his retired years, James found a passion for cooking. While Babe was known for barbeque, he became known for having some of the best potato salad. He also enjoyed playing pool, boxing and outdoor activities like fishing and hunting. Out of all the things he loved, nothing meant more to him than spending time with his family. He was truly "blessed and highly favored" in all aspects of his life.
On Friday, May 29, 2015, Babe made his ascension to heaven. He was greeted on the other side by his parents, John Sr. and Geraldine; and step-father, Edward B. Gordon.
James leaves to cherish his memory his wife Carolyn Ann King; his daughter, Katherine Elaine Heath, of Kansas City, MO; sons, Eric Head, Michael Head, James King Jr., and Bruce King, all of Des Moines, IA; a sister, Marilyn King; six brothers, John King Jr., Robert King, Elias King, Richard King, Edward Kind and Anthony King, all of Columbia MO., grandchildren, Shequaila "Shay" Heath, Airious Heath, JonDale Johnson, Marquail Johnson, Justis S.T. Head, Lamar J.E. Head, Selah M.R. Head, Shakira M. Stiefvater, Kayliana C. King, Bruce E.J. King; two great-grandchildren, LaMiyah Heath and Tezyon Elbert.
