Hazel Coleman was born June 10th, 1933 in Magee, MS to Jim and Lelar (Funchess) Williamson. Hazel was the second youngest of their twelve children. After graduating high school in Magee, MS Hazel married Melvin Coleman, Sr. The two moved to Des Moines, IA where they began planting roots of their own. Sadly her husband would pass away in 1971. Hazel later found love again with her long time companion, Cecil Edwards.
Hazel kept up the family tradition and had her own set of 12 children; Melvin Jr., Margaret, Marshall, Loretta, Jimmy, Maxine, Michael, Shannon, Billy, Melva, Corey and Gina. Hazel continued to show her love of family by being the foster mother to over 100 other children. When she moved north, she joined Maple Street Baptist Church and never left. Hazel dedicated her life to Christ allowing her to shower everyone with love, affection and understanding. She loved helping senior citizens too. Hazel was known for being an excellent cook of homemade southern cuisine. She had a faithful following of those who looked for her guinea grinders during Drake Relays. She liked to fish, garden, play bingo and travel. She had been to every state. Fun loving and entertaining, Hazel had a beautiful smile. Dont let that smile fool you though, she wasnt for any foolishness.
Hazel also had a passion for politics as she worked hand in hand with her best friend, Evelyn Davis, on many campaigns including the Kennedys. She was also a member of Princess Zorah Chapter #10 Order of the Eastern Star and Rose Temple #33 of the Daughters of the Improved Benevolent Protective Order of Elks of the World.
