Mother Hattie Jones was born November 22, 1912 in Sidley Mississippi to Henry and Fannie (Verse) Jones. She received her primary schooling in Mississippi before moving north to Chicago as a young woman.
Hattie was employed for a number of years as an airline employee and as a cook. And a good cook she was! She specialized in good old soul food. Her apple cake was the bomb! Even though Hattie could cook, she enjoyed someone else's cooking also. She loved eating Kentucky Fried Chicken. She would fix a snack for the children every day, when they came home from school. Hot dogs and pork n beans were a favorite.
Hattie was easy going and loved playing scrabble and bingo. She passed the time listening to gospel music and gardening. She even won an award for her flowers.
Hattie moved to Des Moines in 1994 and briefly attended Cornerstone Church. She visited Union one Sunday and decided to stay. She was a member of the Mothers Board at Union.
Mother Hattie Jones fought the good fight of faith and made her transition on November 30, 2016, eight days after her 104th birthday.
Left to cherish her memory are her only child, Henry Jones; her grand children, Carmen (Glen) Thomas and Dr. Rachel Jones; great grandchildren Christian, MaKenna and Benjamin and her special children, Harvey and Eddie Thompson along with her church family and friends.
