Mrs. Eva Young, 1st Lady of Mt. Hebron Baptist Church, passed away December 24, 2022.


A visitation is planned for Friday, December 30, 2022 at the Henderson's Chapel from 5-7pm. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 31, 2022 at Corinthian Baptist Church starting at 10am. 


First Lady Estella Eva Mae Young was born August 8, 1945 to parents, Elijah and Gussie Lee of Batesville, MS. She moved to California at an early age and returned to Batesville at the age of 16. She attended Batesville High School. After a very lovely courtship, she was married to Bobby Lee Young of Batesville, Mississippi. In1963, she moved with her husband to Des Moines, Iowa where she and Bobby later became members of Mt. Hebron Missionary Baptist Church, under the late Pastor James Harris.

First Lady Eva was known for her beautiful suits with matching hat and shoes, looking like she just stepped out of Vogue magazine. She was well known and loved in the community as well as in her church. She was a strong prayer warrior. She was a great teacher in the youth department at Mt. Hebron Church. She and was well respected and loved by her students. She served on many different auxiliaries in the church. Whatever she did, she did it well!

First Lady Eva has always loved children, was always kind, considerate, and very approachable. She was a great influence, as well a great example to follow. She enjoyed traveling, shopping, and fine dining. She had a great sense of humor, loved to play Uno and drink Pepsi, and she could be ornery at times. Eva loved to cook and was great at it. She was known for her chicken and dressing. She was always afraid of dogs until she met Penny (Eltegra and Laura’s dog). She spent 58 years married to the love of her life, her best friend, Rev. Bobby Young; and always had a special relationship with each of her grandchildren. First Lady often talked about wanting to be an Airline Stewardess; but followed the pathway to be a Teacher in the Des Moines School District for thirteen years. She worked in the Special Needs Program, and worked at North Alternative School, teaching and educating young girls on parenting. She was a good marriage counselor. She worked at Tiny Tots for many years under the direction of Evelyn Davis and Doris Tuck. She was a foster parent for years, caring for many children and even feeding the children in the neighborhood. She was very talented in Arts and Crafts. She used to grow Tulips every year for a certain child who would come and pick them for his mother every year on Mother’s day. She was the Vice President of the Women’s Department of the State Convention, the Vice President of East Side Union Mission. She was the President of Mt Hebron’s Mission and served as secretary at Gateway/ Model City. She was a big part of Operation Blessing. Lady Eva was part of the initiative to start the radio station, KUCB. She loved good gospel music, and was a huge Lee Williams fan.

Lady Eva Young passed away on Christmas Eve, 2022. Preceding her in death were her father, Elijah Lee; mother, Gussie Lee; brothers, Aaron Lee and Willie Albert Lee and her sister, Ruthie Bivins. She leaves behind, her husband, best friend, and her heart, Pastor Bobby Young; daughter, Christein Young; sons, Tommie Young (Angela) and Eltegra Young (Laura); her sister, Susie Ballentine; grandchildren, Titus (Gaylena), Brandon (Ayeshah), Natasha, Dallas, Aaron, Nayron, Taysia and Elias; great-grandchildren, Niayala, Jace, Kylan and Leilani, along with a host of nieces, nephews, church family and friends.

First Lady Estella Eva Mae Young will be dearly missed.
