Elmer Carter

Elmer Joseph Carter was born August 2, 1942 at Broadlawns Hospital in Des Moines, IA. He was the fourth child born to Aaron Bathel Carter Sr. and Alene Naomi Warren Carter. The oldest child born was Patricia Ann, followed by Barbara Ann, Aaron Jr., Carolyn Naomi, JoAnn Marie, Leslie Henry, Linda Pearl, James Webster, Clarence Richard, Michael Kerry and Steven Allen Carter.



Elmer attended Irving Junior High School and Technical High School in Des Moines. He continued his education at Drake University where he earned a degree in business.

In 1960, he was drafted in the U.S. Army and received training in San Antonio, TX. He was stationed in Germany for two years. Following his service in the military, he was employed by the United States Postal Service from 1967 until his retirement in 2004.



Elmer received Christ at a very young age, and was ordained as a minister before the age of 20. In 1972, he was ordained as an evangelist. In 1989 he became the Pastor of Ecclesiastical Bible Learning; in 2004 the church was renamed to New Covenant Christian Faith Church. Throughout his ministerial career he served as YPWW President, Sunday School Superintendent and famed Choir Director. He also served as Chaplin at the Knoxville Veteran's Hospital.



In the spring of 1969, Elmer was introduced to his future wife Sharon, by his future mother in law Virginia Jeter while he was a letter carrier in Des Moines. That same year, he married Sharon Jeter. Their union produced three daughters, Stephanie Roxanne, Elaine Marie and Christine Kay; whom will always remember him as a strict but loving father.



Elmer was an intelligent man, kind hearted and had a great sense of humor. He was faithful, true to his word and hardworking. A steward time, he was always very punctual. He enjoyed basketball and his favorite team was the Chicago Bulls. His other hobbies included track and field, photography, songwriting and singing. Elmer was also well traveled and took a trip to the Holy Land.



Elmer leaves behind his wife of 45 years, Sharon; his daughters, Stephanie, Elaine and Christine; his son in law, Jesus; his grandchildren, Danna Paola and Fernando Jesus; his siblings, Barbara (Leroy) Johnson, Leslie (Brenda) Carter, James (Antoinette) Carter, Clarence (Karen) Carter and Steven (Deborah) Carter; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends and acquaintances throughout the United States.
