Donald Floyd Fraser

Donald Floyd Fraser was born August 10, 1923 in Mason City, Iowa to Floyd and Irene (Peshak) Fraser. He was the oldest of four children. He completed his primary and secondary education in Mason City, and also graduated from Mason City Junior College. After graduation, Don enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served as a pilot during World War II. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1945.

Don came back to Mason City after his tour of duty and found employment at ISO of Iowa. During this time Don also found the love of his life, Kathryn Forgy. He would often walk ten miles for a date with his soon to be wife. Don and Kay were married July 17th, 1949; and they were blessed with three children; Linda, Donna and Keith. In 1975, ISO transferred Don and his family to Des Moines and he retired in 1988.

Don became acquainted with the other love of his life in high school. Don had a beautiful speaking and singing voice. He joined the Mason City Men's Glee Club which in 1955 became the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America. Don would lend his melodious, baritone voice to several quartet singing groups over the years. He was a member of the River City Barbershop Chorus in Mason City, the Pride of Iowa Chorus in Des Moines, The Silvertops, Novatones, Mid-West Four, The Iowans, Iowa Pride and the "new" Silvertops. In 1965, Don was chosen Barber Shopper of the year! Don was blessed with the ability to play piano by ear and used his talent to arrange and re-arrange over 500 pieces of music. He often offered his talent as a soloist for weddings, funerals and the church choir. He was a Contest Sound Judge and loved teaching people about Barbershop harmony and history. Music wasn't just a hobby-it was his passion. He will be remembered as a kind and generous Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather, Great-Great Grandfather, brother and friend. He shared his gift and love for music to make a more harmonious world for us all.

On November 18, 2015, Don stepped from time into eternity. He was 92 years old. Waiting to welcome him home were his wife, Kathryn; his parents, Floyd and Irene; his brother, Buddy Fraser; a brother in law, Roger Anderson and granddaughter, Lani Carson.

Left to cherish Don's memory are his children and their spouses, Linda and Ron Hoffman, Donna and Mel Torkelson and Keith and Linda Fraser; his brother, Jeff and Alleen Fraser; his sister, Fae and Richard Laird, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, the cousins (1st and 2nd), extended family and many, many friends.
