Our beloved Cheryl Dean Smith was born in 1954 in Saginaw, Michigan to Lubertha Abraham and Charles Smith. Cheryl had six sisters and brothers: Rufus Smith (deceased), Beverly Lewis (Calvin), Connie Smith, Renda Abraham, Gregory Smith, and Vanessa Abraham (deceased).
Cheryl graduated from Hayti High School in Hayti, Missouri. She received the Babe Ruth Award for her sportsmanship, leadership and scholarship abilities. Cheryl was active in various organizations and was the captain of her cheerleading squad. Cheryl ranked number 5 in her senior class. Upon graduating from high school, Cheryl attended Lincoln University in Jefferson City, MO. She completed one year and then moved to Chicago, Illinois and completed courses to become a legal secretary for various law firms in Chicago for 30 years. During her career, she saw a need for secretarial staff for small churches in her community. She started Letter Perfect secretarial services and serviced several pastors in the Chicagoland area. Cheryl worked several jobs and businesses in her career to ensure a good quality of life for her family.
Cheryl belonged to Cornerstone Family Church in Des Moines, Iowa since her move to Iowa in 2010. Cheryl was an avid learner of the Word of God and her faith was unwavering. Her favorite Bible readings were the book of Psalms and Proverbs.
Cheryl gave birth to her one and only child, Dr. Kimberly Wayne. She devoted her life to nurturing Kim and ensuring that she soared to great heights. She leaves a legacy of service, love and nurturing to Kim and others in her sphere of influence. You could not stop Cheryl from bragging about the character and accomplishments of her dear daughter, and that love and devotion was returned to her through daily care giving. Kim was truly Cheryls precious jewel and she honored her mom by completing her doctorate in education leadership within hours of her dear mothers homegoing.
Cheryls talents and hobbies included gardening, quilting, wood working and reading. She had creative hands and witty ideas and was recognized for her quilt designs through her quilting guilds.
Cheryl had a sense of humor fraught with a spicy, quick wit that brought smiles and laughter from anyone who interacted with her. Cheryl could lighten anyones day through her encouraging and kind words. One of her favorite verses was the fruits of the spirit in Galatians 5: 22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!
Cheryl transitioned to glory on Thursday, September 27th. Preceding her in death were her parents, Lubertha and Charles, and two siblings, Rufus and Vanessa. Left behind to cherish their memories of Cheryl are: Dr. Kimberly Wayne, Beverly Lewis (Calvin), Connie Smith, Renda Abraham, Gregory Smith, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of dear friends.
