Charlene Smith Lee was born April 26, 1944 in Portsville, Missouri to Walter and Mary C. (Whitfield) Smith. Charlene (pronounced Char-leen) was one of seven children born to that union. The family moved to Des Moines for more opportunities.

Charlene loved life and lived it to the fullest! Strong willed and high spirited she did what she wanted. She left school early because she was in love with Gary D. Lee. They married and soon raised a family. Sadly Gary would precede Charlene in death.

Charlene had her hands full with the children, but she kept them in line and taught them well. She loved to eat soul food and taught them to cook. If you were hungry, Charlenes was the place to go! She loved cooking and watching you eat. She didnt want to see anyone go hungry. Charlene would give you straight up advice. She told you the truth as she saw it and didnt care if you got mad. Charlene loved family get togethers and having her family around her. She would help those in need any way she could. But she wasnt for any nonsense. She would "cluck" you with her cane if you got too smart. She loved eating candy, pig feet, spaghetti and of course, fried chicken.

Charlene passed away October 18, 2018 at the age of 74. waiting for her on the other side were Gary her husband, her parents, Mary and Walter; her brothers Nathaniel, James and Walter and her grandchildren Jessica, Johnathan and Kevin.

Left behind to cherish her memory are her children; Pat Patton, Jeffery Flag, Tricia Smith, Anna Woods (Terry Parker), Sharley Walker, Alice (Lester) Lee, Evetta Scott, Richardo Scott, Mary Lee, Terreno (Johnie) Hill Sr., Gary Lee Jr and Tina Lee; a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren; god children Vanity, Fredrick, Mark and Tasha; siblings, Catherine (Emmanuel) Weaver, Albert (Roseanne) Smith, Dallas (Sheila ) Smith, Frank (Gretchen) Smith and Jeffrey (Tracy) Smith and many friends.
