Carl Lamar Sr.

Carl Lamar Sr. passed away on November 21, 2019. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 30, 2019, at Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church.

Carl Lamar was born March 22, 1949 in Chicago Illinois to John & Thressa (Cherry) Lamar. He was the fifth born son of nine siblings right in the middle. Carl was 10 years younger than his oldest sibling and 10 years older than the youngest.

Carl was raised in Chicago. The Lamar family later moved to West Des Moines in 1955, where he graduated from Valley High School. He was baptized at an early age by the late Reverend James Harris, at Mt. Hebron Baptist Church. Carl was employed at AMP, Wilson Packing Company and finally Firestone for many years until he retired. He met and married Harriet Cortez, whom he lovingly called, "Ms. Lamar."

Even though he looked innocent, Carl was a jokester! Always into something! Doing and saying things to make you laugh! He had a kind heart & gentle spirit. If you listened carefully, you could catch him walking around whistling, something he always did; but he himself was not always aware of it. At a young age Carl would watch his mom cook. Soon Carl became an excellent baker himself. He was known for his homemade pies & crust from scratch! "Carls Kitchen" made the best Banana Split Dump Cake & Buttermilk Pies. Ever hear of Grit Pie, he made those too!

Carl was an avid fisherman including ice fishing. If you ever saw him around water without his fishing poles, something was definitely wrong! He took several people fishing to experience it for their 1st time! When the weather was good or bad, he would hitch his boat to the truck and head for the waters! His favorite spot was Red Rock. There were times hed even catch a flight to fish some different waters. Talking about a fish fry, he would catch croppies and filet them like a no one could! After eating hed talk about his catches while playing dominoes and listening/singing to his old skool music in the garage!

His deepest love was for his family, his grandchildren & great-grandchildren.

Early Friday morning on November 22nd, 2019, Carl Lamar drifted into sweet slumber. But to be absent from the body, is to be present with the Lord. He was 70 years young. Preceding him in death were his parents, John and Thressa Lamar: a son, Danterell Lamar; siblings, Diane, Michael & Larry Lamar and his stepfather, Omar James.

His kind and peaceful spirit will be missed by his faithful wife of 43+ years, Harriett; children, Carl Lamar Jr., Curtis Thomas and Angelique Bell; brothers, Eugene Cherry, Dennis Lamar and Wayne Lamar; sisters, Pam Lamar, Judy Lamar and Omega James; grandchildren, Deshay Bell, Tayvon Bell, LaVell Bell, Sharnina Bell, Sharnae Lamar, Danterell Lamar, Naszir Lamar; great-grandchildren, JaVion Bell, Markese Bell, Camarion Bell, Treymire Lee Bell, Trey Lee, Tayvon Bell Jr. and a host of extended family and close friends.
