Bertha Jenkins

Evangelist Bertha Jenkins, affectionately known as "Mother Jenkins", was born July 30, 1927 to the late Dwight and Opal (Mulkey) Webb in Eldon, Miller County, Missouri. She was the ninth of ten children who all preceded her in death. During the Great Depression, her mother started the Sunset Caf restaurant where she worked as a waitress and dishwasher while attending school. In 1947, she graduated with honors from C.C. Hubbard High School, Sedalia, Missouri and was Vice-President of her Senior class.



Bertha met the love of her life Scott Jenkins, II, and married in Des Moines, Iowa. To that union was born seven children. Bertha was a school homeroom mother who helped to start the Blue Star Program which showed kids where they could go to be safe. She allowed her children to participate in the Iowa Breakfast Study which showed the importance of children having a nourishing breakfast.



Mother Jenkins started voting at the age of 21 and has been very active politically never missing an opportunity to vote in 67 years. She participated in the Iowa primaries and was a familiar face at the Black and Brown Caucuses. She was very excited to see the inauguration of President Barack Obama. Mrs. Jenkins was active in the Parent Teacher Association, Young People's choir director at her church, Federal census worker, and served on the Woodland-Wilkie Priority Board.



Bertha Jenkins assisted her husband in starting a business, Jenkins Clean Car Service in 1972 which operated for 28 years. She preached her first sermon on September 8, 1972. On October 25, 1972 she was ordained as a Pentecostal Evangelist. While being in this position she would travel throughout the United States preaching and teaching the gospel.



Bertha was called home to glory "for a work well done" on July 17, 2016. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Scott Jenkins, II, sons Carl Jenkins, Sr., Scott Jenkins, Jr., and Darryl Jenkins, granddaughters Bertha Williams and Javanna Lee, and grandson Carl Jenkins Jr. Left to cherish her memories are five daughters; Venita Lee, Carol Williams, Antoinette (Charles) Battle all from Des Moines, Iowa; Mozella (Armand) Dyer of Kansas City, Kansas, Brenda (Wardell) Watkins of Olathe, Kansas; 20 Grandchildren (Donya, Kay, Kevin, Cozetta, Raymond, Shaun, Lonnie-Scott, Lance, Nicole, Danelle, Wardell III, Denise, Jamilah, Isoke, Tony, Brendan, Tamika; 30 Great Grandchildren, and four Great-Great Grandchildren, her church family, Faith Apostolic Temple, Inc. of Kansas City, Revival Center Church of Des Moines, and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
